HOLOCAUST

Sixty years ago a foul and despicable enemy that had arisen from and of the German people
was finally defeated, but not before 50 million human beings were destroyed, including 6 million of our own Jewish men, women and little children. The enormity of this crime against humanity and specifically against the Jewish people, cannot, even today, be understood. The reality, nay even the thought, of millions of precious individual human beings destroyed by gas and fire is so terrible that we continue to suffer, we are still adrift in an ocean of tears.

The Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center is proud to be the home of over 300 Holocaust Survivors.  The Synagogue offers a unique and personal perspective of the more recent history of the Jewish people - and their strength, courage and will to not only survive, but to flourish. The Holocaust Memorial Museum, built under the director of Holocaust Chairman, Victor Cynamon,  provides a teaching tool that is utilized by Jewish and secular schools throughout the county. Many of the survivors make educational presentations to students, community organizations and other temples on their personal experiences. As we move forward, they add a very special component to our growth.  Another education tool, has been the implementation of our Holocaust Survivor Documentary.
Each year the Synagogue hosts a community-wide Yom Hashoa service and program,  Survivors light candles each candle representing 1million Jews who perished. A 7th candle is lit in memory of the 1.5 million children who were brutally murdered because they committed the crime of being born Jewish. The participation of the Tauber Academy students, sing stirring shoa songs, which make the service an even more meaningful experience for all.  Our sanctuary is a peaceful safe haven, which is where we find ourselves, located in a free country which itself has acted as a sanctuary for persecuted people of all nations fleeing oppression and murderous tyranny, of which there is certainly no shortage in our world. Not only do we find ourselves in this safe place in America, but also, as Jews we are comforted and reassured by the existence of the modern State of Israel, a country that has proven itself willing and capable of rising to the defense of Jewish people who are threatened anywhere by contemptible anti-Semites.
