ATJC Sisterhood

The Sisterhood of the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center are partners who share the responsibility for the survival and growth of our congregation. Together, they form a family whose strength is its ability to provide a full spectrum of services to the Congregation.  The role of the Sisterhood is to provide experiences for women such as personal growth through companionship and self-fulfillment and through dedication to the strengthening of Jewish life.

Since the very beginning, the ATJC Sisterhood has been an integral part of our synagogue’s life, providing a network of support for the congregation and for its members. The synagogue experience is enhanced multifold through their efforts; it would be impossible to imagine synagogue life without them.

The Sisterhood was established in 1984 as a ladies auxiliary to meet congregational needs of the small storefront synagogue.  The responsibilities the ladies had taken on called for a more dedicated organization and thus the ATJC Sisterhood was born.  Our first Sisterhood Presidents were Selma Cirulnick & Rose Auerback who have been followed by an amazing series of dedicated and energetic women with our current Presidents, Eme Chaikin and Audrey Bornstein. Each bringing their own vision of warmth and creativity to synagogue life.  Sisterhood has also supported the synagogue, school, and even dedicated their own office. They built a dairy kitchen, established a gift shop; and published a cookbook.   And in conjunction with the Red Magen David, Sisterhood member, Julia Weiss, z'l,  donated a Red Magen David fully-equipped ambulance in memory of her husband, William.  The Sisterhood is very active in social action, and for over two decades has been actively involved in helping to make the community a better place.  Each year, they collect money and goods for the Kosher Food Bank; Chanukah gifts were given to children of JAFCO.  They have beautified the Synagogue through their donation of Torah Mantels; dedicated  the Unity Window in the Soffer Sanctuary, the Frank Meisler Menorah; a Chair on the Bimah, Torah Covers and a Torah Table Cover.

A vital Sisterhood depends on its individual members and we have been blessed with a congregation who believes in the importance of maintaining and enhancing the congregational experience.
